Morning Mantra

February 24, 2009

This morning I was reading Jack Kornfield’s A Path With Heart and decided to take up the first exercise in the book for the next few weeks: a centuries old mantra. I said it a few times and wrote it down to start memorizing it and left for work. On my walk, I was standing at a traffic light watching the cars go by and I started to look at the drivers and after four or five cars passed me by, I realized that every single one of those drivers was talking on their cell phones. It suddenly hit me how much cell phones have affected us. We no longer have to face the silence (and therefore ourselves). And then I thought: How would our world change if all those people instead of rambling on to someone else, was actually reciting this mantra to themselves:

May I be filled with loving-kindness

May I be well

May I be peaceful and at ease

May I be happy

And that was my mantra this morning for the last 15 minutes of my walk to work. Jack recommends this mantra 15 minutes 2 times per day for several weeks until you start to feel very loving about yourself. This is the first step. Let’s try it.
