Meeting the west

November 2, 2010

I’m back in America after a short trip to Italy. Everything is fast, people move fast, talk fast and think fast. Is faster better?
I watched a woman on my flight from Milan to London who if you put her behind glass in a white padded room would obviously be someone to analyze for some psychological disturbance. Her eyes were shifty, her feet tapped, muscles tense and continuously alternated between fingering strands of her hair, spontaneous snacking, reading the headlines and looking nervously around her. My first day out of India and I couldn’t help but think: we’ve mostly become neurotics. We need help but we can’t recognize the abnormal since it’s become the norm.
What are we accomplishing with speed? Where exactly do we think we’re heading?
